Ostentatious, that's what a woman said as she was looking at my beadwork in the Gallery. She did not know that I was the beader...it was just her immediate reaction when she walked up to my display. Ok so how do I take that? It means, flashy, trashy, garish, crass, flamboyant, pompous, highfaluting (my favorite), swanky, extravagant, and on and on. It has left me afflicted with doubt. I wanted to reply that she was afterall in a GALLERY. But I said nothing, and here 3 weeks later it is still leaving me in a state of doubt. I guess maybe I should hang up my beads....but then what would I do? Oh well, just keep plugging along I guess. Am I getting thinned skinned in my old age? That picture makes me laugh...I'm not sure why....I know living in a mainly fishing village that fancy beadwork is not on the "I want" list for locals, but the tourists seem to like it. Especially the ones that live in big cities or ones that are very socially inclined.
Well, I will leave behind a yard sale of items for my kids to get rid of.
Well, 2018 is off and running. I pray that this year will be a good year for all in my family and my friends. Last year was a real trial at times, but here we are still going maybe not strong, but still going.

My biggest wish is for my Grandson Jasiah that his life will smooth out and be much better this year. He has emotional problems that at times can be violent. However I have found that the good days are just as stressful waiting for the other shoe to drop so to speak. Anyway, he is the main event in my prayers at night.

I have been staying busy with my sewing and beading and getting new things made for the Gallery when we re-open. Right now we are all working on painting, cleaning and re-arranging displays. We will re-open on Feb. 10th. I am loving all the aprons that I am making. I just love fabric to be honest . And of course beads, where would the world be without beads. I will try to post some pictures of what I have been working on. I do this mainly for my Sisters so they can see that I really am doing something once in awhile. This first photo below is of a necklace I made for a friend to celebrate her daughters wedding this past fall. We walked the beach collecting shells, rocks, and small driftwood pieces for decorating. I always pick up knarly twigs and such, which I incorporate into my beadwork when I can.

Try try again, my photo of the necklace disappeared on me. So here goes another try.

this posting is going to be a real mess I suspect. Hang in there with me. I can't seem to move the photos where I want them. She is such a tiny little thing that its hard to judge size. Besides which she is such an amazing seamstress that its kind of scarey to do any sewing for her. She is one of the toughest Women I have ever known. She has terrible Rheumatoid Arthritis which has twisted her poor hands badly, does she complain..NO, she just keeps on doing her sewing and beading by learning to hold her needles a little differently. On this day she has on flipflops because her one leg and foot was so badly swollen from the Arthritis. She is such a character, I love her dearly. Bea and our friend Karen have always been so gracious to share their families with me since our children and grandchildren all live in the lower forty-eight. Bea and I both miss Karen very much. The three of us had so many fun times together, putting on Teas and Luncheons at the Lodge, bumming around town together, (takes about a half hour to visit every store in town) and having our coffee and beading sessions. I made a jacket for Karen many years ago, I know I have a picture of her jacket somewhere, when I find it I will include it here. As I have said before....Time Flies......make the most of it my friends, make the most of it. Its cloudy but sunny today, and I am waiting for the tide to go out so I can go for a walk. Thank goodness for the beach..I can go there and walk and let the sounds of the water wash the stress and worries away...for a short while anyway. The grass is starting to green-up. Can't wait for things to bloom out so it doesn't look so darn drab! I am still working on my two beading projects..haven't had much time lately, don't know why..hope to finish up at least one today. Time to get moving................
I have finally finished the quilted jacket that I started LAST YEAR for my friend Bea. I started "collecting" black and white fabric for her jacket in 2011. How embarrassing is that. I knew that I wanted to make the jacket mostly black and white with just a touch of red, her favorite. I am happy with how it finally turned out, I am not happy with my putting things off so long. Now, if it just fits her ok, I tried it on her before the sleeves were sewn on and it fit pretty good, just needed a slight adjustment in the shoulders. She was unaware that I was making the jacket until she stopped by one day and I decided to be smart and try it on her. Now that it is done, I hope it fits ok. She will be receiving the jacket today. I guess you could call it her Birthday, Christmas, Mothers Day x 2 Jacket. Procrastinating is not becoming!! Now to finish my beading projects. Yesterday was beautiful, today is very very overcast but a good temperature, 43, and not much of a breeze, there may be a walk in my near future. Well maybe later, I just let our little step-dog out and its now raining. DRATS!!
Well, March sped by and now April is on its way out, where does the time go? I have been busy, doing what I'm not sure, but here are some of the projects that I have been working on. The first is the Maiden for April Bead Journal Project, the others are for the Watercolor corner at the Gallery. The RedPoll and Pussywillow is for the Spring show, and the Sunflower and Jugs were just for fun, they will go into the Watercolor corner in June probably. I really never thought I would like watercolor at all, but the more I do, the more I like it. Although, Oils will always be my first love. Nothing like an oil painting. I have so much to learn in watercolor, and boy does it show sometimes. Worldwide this has been such an ugly month, we can only hope that May will bring something wonderful.
The tear drop shape was a bead, but had a flat back so it was perfect for a cabachon, and the oval above it was an earring in its other life. The strap is a loose spiral at the bottom and a smaller spiral at the neck edge. I used a "Vintage" look button for the closure. This photo does not show how beautiful the colors are. Should have taken it outside.
I painted four pictures of the Chickadees, spring, summer, fall and winter.
The picture of the geese was a picture I had seen in an old Art magazine. I tore the picture out, so I no longer know which publication it was in. I do love painting birds . The picture below is of my March Maiden. She is in pastel in keeping with Easter. Why is Easter Pastel? Just in my world maybe. Anyway, pink with flowers for SPRING!!!
We were supposed to get up to fresh snow today, thank goodness that did not occur, however the sky is still making threats. Too much nervous energy lately, I WANT SPRING!!!!! Well, really, we have had some beautiful sunny days, COLD but beautiful. I have even been down to walk the beach three times in the last week and a half. Went to a different area of the beach to walk yesterday.....talked to a "Homerite" because she was determined to talk to me, actually I mostly listened to her life story that she was determined to tell me about. Thankfully her dog struck up another friendship and off she went to ....perhaps finish her story with someone else. Now I know why I rarely walk this stretch of beach, not that I mind visiting with others....sometimes. I have projects to finish, so I should get busy, besides housework needs to be done, back to work tomorrow.
I also participated in the "Painted Plate" project for the Bunnell Gallery. This is the first time (and could be the last) I have participated in their fund raiser. Ceramics and I have not had a great relationship in the past. I am terrified that the 3 plates I painted will turn out terrible. Well, I won't know for another month. Then I may have to send them a "Sorry" card, time will tell.

We received the call today that we had been dreading. Our beautiful friend has left us. I am so glad that I got to spend last Thursday with her. It was a rough day for her, but we had some laughs and battered back a few tears along the way. She was looking forward to going home and being done with the needles and IV's for awhile. When I left, we both said "I love you". Thank you God for that, it doesn't make the loss any easier, but at least I got to tell her I loved her. Our thoughts all day have been with her Family. They are all strong individuals, and will be there for their Dad,who's battling his own health issues , it just leaves "us" the Friends with ....????....no matter what words you use, no matter how many things you would like to say...they're just words. Do they help? Not really, only time helps, and personal space. But we must say something right? She was Bossy, opinionated, beautiful, compassionate, a hard worker, a Beader, can't forget that, and funny, and so much fun to be around. I admired her "Can-Do" attitude and friendliness to all. She leaves a big hole in a lot of lives. Cancer..........there are no words.................I miss her terribly already, I miss our "Beady" get togethers, the card games, lunch, laughter, just sharing our lives for a short time. The pain and suffering is over for her....the heartbreak for those she left behind has just begun. I can hear your laughter "Queenie", I hope it stays with me forever..........

Looking out the window at the Beach this AM and was suddenly overwhelmed with the desire to "Be There", so off I went. It was 36 and no wind, made for such a great walk, and I only picked up one shell and one rock...a new record for me. No beach glass today, but I ran into a friend that says she has found a real treasure of glass. Hmmmm, and she walks the same area as I do, however she told me she walks every day. I need to get down there more. Came home and Mr J said he felt like eating today so we went for a burger and Ice tea. Came back home and finished the clasp on my cuff, darn, its just a little big for me, I made it to take to the Gallery, but I may have to "embed it with my "essence" for a day or two before I take it down. I used Turquoise of course and Carnelian and the coin. I love the more Ethnic look, and it will look good in the showcase with the Necklace I made just before we closed for painting. Now to finish my friends quilted jacket, and get busy on baby things for the two new babies that will be born in a couple of months. Two more Great-grandchildren expected. One Boy and one Girl, two different families. Can't wait!!

Well, its been awhile since I have made an entry in the blog, I have been busy, we had to put the Gallery back together and of course to make matters worse, I was called for Jury Duty. I had two days to go to be excused and they nabbed me. So Rowan ended up doing a lot on her own. Our boss lady was ill at this time and the other gal that works part time was out of state...when it rains it pours. I am also working on my watercolor piece for the Collaborative picture the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society is working on for the Spring show. I have 10 days.....the pressure is on. I think I drew the most complicated piece of the picture...drats! I don't want to let them down....anyway, here's Miss February Bead Journal Maiden.

Well, 2013.....and we still don't have those little personal spacecrafts to zip around in like we all thought we would have back when the Jetsons were on TV. When was that? The 60's ? so much has happened in the years since that show was on TV. TV has gone to the dogs!! The majority of the shows on now are just disgusting. The "Reality" shows are just the worst thing to come along in years!! Well, except for our local men on the TimeBandit. I did enjoy that show the first three seasons, but that's worn off now, and I find myself hungering for more books to read, but even those..............The world has changed for the worse in so many ways. I so want my Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren to have a beautiful world to grow up in. I feel we need to get GOD back into this world!!! Some radicals have worked so hard to get him out, and have done such a good job...where can we go and what can we do to bring him back? I just pray that our Grandchildren bring their children up BELIEVING!!! I know that some of you out there do not agree, so I say to you....I will keep you in my prayers. Don't you want a more beautiful world? Are you happy with the child abuse, murders, suicide and rapes? No I don't think you are. I believe things will turn around once again, I just hope I live to see it. Sorry if this sounds like a downer, but look around. Maybe its just the weather, I'm sure tomorrow will be a better day. There's always my projects to keep me busy. The Gallery will be closed for three weeks, so I will have time to get many things done.....right? So much illness all around us right now, I guess when you get to be our age, its just part of life........Stay Young my Friends!!!!!!! Laugh often, it sure helps!
Now on to other things, today I finished my January piece for the Bead Journal Project. I finally decided to do small Art Dolls that can be used as Ornaments...see, I have a method to my madness this time. Still haven't decided what to do with last years Journal pieces, or for that matter, I keep taking out the small squares I beaded for 2011 looking them over, then put them back...I know one day everything will fall into place and I will know what to do with them. Perhaps use one or two on a handbag....hmmmmm something to think about. Anyway, my 2013 Maiden for January is all white with a touch of silver. She embodies all the snow and ice we've had so far this month with more on the way. I love making these dolls, thanks to
Robin Atkins, she inspired me several years ago to start making them. So its fun to make them once again.
So my 2012 BJP is finished, photo'd and now I am ready to start on 2013. I am still trying to make up my mind what I want to do this year, but hopefully I will decide before I fall way behind. Here are the months of 2012 all together. January: Rabbit, February: Moose, March: Squirrel, April:Eagle, May: Pheasant, June:Sandhill Crane, July: Raven, August: Dragonfly, September: Swan, October: Seagulls, November: Stellar Jay, December: Porcupine.

FINISHED!!! My hands are protesting from all the hand work that was required with the ruffle because of the bulky velvet. And what in the world has happened to the thread that we buy nowadays? It used to be really strong, now it just tangles and snaps at the worst times. I fished around and found my upholstery thread and life was so much better. I really like the lace that I used on this pillow, it had a nice shine to it, made it look so much richer. I will make more of these pillows.....later.....when my hands have a chance to rest. Can't ruin the hands, have too many beads that must be put to use. Next time I will pleat the velvet if I use it for a ruffle rather than gather it, maybe that will make it easier. Well, enough for tonight, work tomorrow and Monday, then I don't know for sure when I will work again. She always closes for 3-4 weeks in January to paint and re-arrange the Gallery. Oh good grief, that means INVENTORY!!! Ahhhhh wellllll, it will go quickly, I hope.

So the Lovely Lady that I work for will be having a Birthday in the middle of January, and I have been working on a "Crazy Quilt" bed pillow for her. I think I'm pretty much done with embellishing the top, so today I made a slow run out to the Russian Fabric Store(we have lots of snow right now) to try and find just the right lace for the edging. I wasn't able to find exactly what I had in mind, but I will figure it out.(which is quite outstanding considering the tremendous amount of beautiful lace that they have out there, not to mention all the gorgeous fabrics.) Maybe make the ruffle out of one of the velvet colors and add lace into the ruffle. Hmmm, something to think on. She collects and also sells Antique Dolls, besides having the nicest Gallery in town. Since she collects mainly french dolls, I wanted the pillow top to look very Victorian. I think it does. The Victorian style was/is really over the top with a lot of frills, embellishments etc. I was going to use more color in the embellishments, but the white lace started calling the shots, and I decided to not add any more color on top, just leave it in the background. I used clear AB bugle beads and freshwater pearls. I cut flower medallions out of some of the beautiful lace that I purchased at the Russian store and appliqued them in each corner. Each corner is different. I haven't played with the crazy quilting for several years, but I do so enjoy it. I used a log-cabin type of square, with the transferred image for the slightly off-center, center. I added color to the picture with both watercolor and colored pencils. I chose this image because it reminded me of some of her beautiful dolls. I then sprayed the image with fixative. I can't wait to see it finished..hope it ends up like the image I have in my mind. Once done with this project I have another quilting project started that I planned on doing several years ago.....no more procrastinating....we are not guaranteed tomorrow. Then it will be time to start the 2013 BJP. Making a list land checking it twice.....................

Just a note to wish everyone out there a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Tomorrow is the 21st of December, and according to the Mayan Calendar, the end of the world as we know it. Well,we shall see. Hopefully the nutcases of the world will take a day off and not try to make this prediction come true. The loss of all those beautiful babies and their teachers last week has to be the worst thing to happen this year. My heart goes out to all those families, and to the Children that survived this nightmare, they will suffer for a long time to come, quietly perhaps, but Children always seem to keep way too much inside. And may God bless and keep safe all those who are in harms way, attempting to keep us safe here at home. We won't be with our family again this year, but our hearts are certainly with them all. And to our Friends that are battling Cancer, my fervent prayer for them is that there will be a cure for each one of them. It seems to me that the Billions of dollars that have been raised to find a cure for Cancer, must have gone astray, because I haven't heard of a single cure so far. Of course if there was a cure it would put a lot of Pharmaceutical companies out of business, or perhaps slash their great profit margins all to heck! Thinking about it just makes me feel more depressed. Sweet Jesus please bring Peace and Tranquility to this world, and Health and Happiness to all. Wouldn't that be wonderful?
I don't know about anyone else, but I have plans for this coming year, participating in the Bead Journal Project for one thing, and who knows what other challenge will come my way. I was so happy to participate in the Traveling Bracelet Project that Sig Wynn-Evans began. I hope she finds all those Bracelets that are MIA. She certainly spread Good Will around the World. Such a talented designer and beader.
Well World, keep on turning......if not, well, I hope we all get together on the "Other Side". I'm sure there will be peace and Tranquility there.
I titled this one Moose Meadow. Glad it sold, although I really liked this one and thats usually a sign that it won't sell for sure.
I have finished the beaded piece "Carmen" that I was going to donate to a fundraiser for a friend CeCe, however she did not want us to do a fundraiser. CeCe underwent two surgeries for Cancer. She runs a small Cafe over by the old airport, but has been one of the major fundraisers for the community for many years. A very independant and outspoken Lady. CeCe and my husband have a unique relationship, they love to argue, and she is always threatening to 86 him out of her Cafe. They are too funny. At any rate, since she did not want us to raise funds for her, and I had already started the piece, I am giving it to her for Christmas. Seems only fair. I hope she will like it, I still have to put it in a shadowbox and then it will be done.
Had a wonderful long talk with my middle Daughter this morning. We did a lot of laughing, talking, walking down memory lane together. We came to the conclusion that crazy as our family can be at times, compared to other families, we're pretty normal. You just have to love each one for who they are and not who you wish they were. There's really nothing you can do to change people to be what you envision them to be, and they are probably wishing you could be changed to their vision as well. So.....just accept and love.
I have completed the base on the Kachina, so he can now be packed away for shipping in a week or so. As I was finishing him up today I started thinking about the handbag that I beaded for this same Daughter, the design I came up with was bamboo, chinese coin and dragonfly. I loved how it came together, maybe I should make myself a small bag with a similar design, I really like it. The head and body are vintage beads out of my stash. I just love those vintage beads!!!!!
Oh well, now to finish up the rest of the gifts so they can be mailed on time. A little warmer weather would be nice so I can work up in my Attic workroom, I went up there today for a few minutes but it was just too cold. It got up to a high of 9 degrees today, dry and cold. As much as I hate to say it, snow would warm things up a bit. Wishing everyone a good night, especially my friend Karen who is battling brain and lung cancer. Too many of my friends are battling this ugly disease, when will it ever stop?
FINISHED!!!!! With time to spare, and to look at him and maybe add to him or not. I "finished" the Kachina this AM and sat him on my ironing board to take his picture and my worst nightmare came to be..he fell off on to the floor right on his beak!! I was horror struck and for a few moments all I could do was stand there and look at him lying face down on the floor. I finally made myself pick him up and HALLELUJAH!! He was just fine. What was I thinking by standing him on a soft surface? Drove home the thought I had earlier that I might need to attach him to a wider base so that he wouldn't be so tippy. Another Blogger "A Half-baked Notion" suggested that I sew his wings (I whined about this on my blog, as you might have read), and that's what I did. I used two layers of ultra-suede, and I'm satisfied with how they turned out. Thanks Half-baked!! My thoughts ran back to my Raven Dancer while I was staring at him(Kachina) laying on his face on the floor, remember? I had the Raven dancer all done and just had to attach his mask and when I did it snapped right in half! I ended up adding a wider base to him also. I wonder, should I come up with a feather to put in each of his hands? The Kachina I mean. Hmmmmm....something to ponder on. Half-baked has asked for a side view of the Raven, so I am editing this post to include another picture or two.

Well, I have been working on a Kachina Doll for my Daughter. My problem has been that I have no access to feathers, at least not the one's I have in my mind. I guess I will have to Google feathers and see what I can find. I have been to our local Mercantile store, but they have very little in the fishing section and the Gear Shed has no feathers at all. I have to make wings for him and I really don't want to make them out of clay like the ones I made for his top knot. I am afraid they wont travel well..no pun intended. I still have to make his sash and moccasins and add a broader base so he wont be tippy. Time is running out......... I used Raindeer beard for the fluff around his neck and in the top knot to make it fuller. He will be a true Alaskan Kachina. Well, back to the workbench.........we have snow........enough said.

I have been busy, even though I have not posted. I agreed to do an Arts and Crafts Fair with a friend of mine, I don't know why.......the last time I participated in an A&C Fair was with my sister probably 30 years ago. Wow! Could that be right? Well, its been very painful I must say. I've made a few baby bonnets, small card cases which I know should sell,( I've made a lot of these), beaded 8 Eskimo Angels and made necklaces out of them, made a few polar fleece hats and a few more baby bibs. I'm just at a loss as to what to make. The two or three gals that are sharing the space all do jewelry, so thats not an option as far as I'm concerned. Ah well, what ever sells sells what doesn't...goes to the Gallery next season. I also made a hair barrette for our Granddaughters Birthday which is tomorrow. I also made our Great Granddaughter a Raggedy Ann Doll for her Birthday which was November 1st. So, I have been busy, just not chatty.
And I have also been doing some repair work, some for the Gallery and one for myself. I made this necklace about 15 years ago and wear it a lot, the thread finally gave way so I had to restring the necklace, this time I used wire. Well, that's it for now.

Since last I wrote about the Traveling Bracelet, we've been busy. "Abi" has been to work with me, and today we went for coffee with two of my friends referred to here as the "Gallery Girls". Sometimes there's four or five of us sometimes not. Today it was just the three of us, catching up on what's been happening. Sunday was a quiet day, we went to Church, and out to breakfast, which turned out to be the wrong move. I got up with a headache and the day went downhill from there. So Sunday was a very slow and quiet day. i don't mean it was the wrong move to go to Church, just going out to eat was the wrong move. But all is well today.
"Abi" went to work with me on Monday and visited with some of the beautiful artwork that we have in the Gallery. I thought this photo of "Abi" with one of the native art pieces was very appropriate, since the true name of the Bracelet is the Aboriginal Design. Its always such a wonder to me that when I study native art, how connected it is all around the world. So many similarities in artwork and myths and beliefs. It really is such a small world.
Here "Abi" is visiting with the very talented Rowan who works at the Gallery. Besides being an artist in watercolors she is also extremely talented in the music field as well as dance. She has a group here called the "Shivering Gypsy's". Rowan is originally from upstate New York.
Here are my two friends "The Gallery Girls" at our favorite coffee spot, Two Sisters Bakery just steps away from the shores of Kachemak Bay. Some days we will come for coffee and have to wait in a line three deep. They make wonderful soups, veggi sandwiches and of course bakery goods. Even if you're not hungry when you go there, just step inside and oh my, the wonderful aromas just draw you in and you have to try one of their savory offerings.
Its been fun having "Abi" here this week, however its time to say good bye. Tomorrow I will be bundling "Abi" up and mailing the package off to my Sister down in the lower 48. She lives in beautiful Newport, Oregon. Another coastal community for "Abi". She is really looking forward to receiving the bracelet and has more adventures to share with the Bracelet. I can't thank Sig enough for choosing me to host her Aborigianl Bracelet. I feel honored, and look forward to reading about Abi and the other Bracelets. Thanks for the Visit "Abi".
So lunch went well with the new baby, she is absolutely beautiful and slept the entire time we were there. She looked beautiful in the Bonnet and shoes, but then she's beautiful without them anyway. (The Tiny shoes I made were just a little big, but they looked cute on her.) Mommy Miriam looks just beautiful also. She waited just a little too long to call the Midwife, and Mom and Dad delivered the Baby Girl themselves. She said it was a little scarey, but what are you going to do, there's no stopping it once its underway. They both came through it just fine, and Dad stayed pretty cool through the whole event.
Miriam thought the story of the Bracelet was pretty cool. She is an amazing young woman, Hunter, Fisherwoman, Carver, and Jewelry maker. I have known Miriam since she was in High School. Very self assured and quite the businesswoman. She has her own small Gallery out on the Spit. It is only open full time in the summer, but she keeps it open on the weekends until Christmas, then re-opens mid-April. She sells her carvings, watercolors, and jewelry as well as her Husbands Ulu's and Knives. She also carries some Native made art .
Hubby was not feeling well today, so Abi's adventure today was pretty quiet once we came home, but everyone was pretty impressed with the Bracelet and the story behind it. Tomorrow..off to work, and Abi will go along. One more picture of beautiful little Arwyn and then its good night.
